How to Make DIY Wrist and Ankle Weights for Home Workouts

Materials You’ll Need

Equipment/Tools:

Scissors or rotary cutter

Ruler

Fabric marking pen

Sewing pins

Iron

Funnel

Materials:

1 fat quarter of fabric

24 inch 1-inch sew-in Velcro

Thread that matches the color of your Velcro

Weighted filler (rice, sand, etc.)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut Out Your Pieces

Cut out four pieces of fabric from your fat quarter, each measuring 15 inches by 5 inches. Cut 8 pieces of Velcro into 3-inch long strips. You should have four hook sides and four loop sides so each piece of Velcro has a pair. Set these aside until later.

2. Mark Your Velcro Placement

Before you sew together the fabric for the weights, you’ll want to plan where your Velcro goes so it can be attached first. Lay out your fabric with the long sides on the top and bottom, with the fabric right side up. Take one piece of fabric and measure 1/2 inch in from the left side. Draw a line with your fabric marking pen. Measure 1 inch from the top of the piece of fabric and draw a line. Take another piece of fabric and measure in the same way but this time on the right side of the fabric, a line 1/2 inch from the left side and a line 1 inch from the top. Repeat the placement lines on two other pieces of fabric for the second weight.

3. Pin Your Velcro

Take a piece of hook side Velcro (the scratchy side) and place it where the two lines on the left side intersect, lining up the intersection with the top left side of the Velcro. Pin the Velcro down to the fabric. Take your other hook side Velcro and place it right beside the first piece. Pin this piece of Velcro down as well. Take a piece of loop tape (the soft side) and place it where the two lines intersect on the other piece of fabric, lining up that intersection with the top right corner of the piece of Velcro. Place another piece of Velcro beside it, to the left. Pin down the Velcro. Repeat pinning the Velcro for the second weight.

4. Attach Your Velcro

Using thread that matches the color of your Velcro, sew all the way around each piece of Velcro to secure it to the fabric. Take out the pins as you’re sewing. Remove fabric marking. Repeat sewing the Velcro for the second weight.

5. Put Together the Main Body

Lay down your piece of fabric with the Velcro on the left side of it, right side up. Take your other piece of fabric and place it on top, wrong side up, the Velcro on the right side. One set of Velcro should be on one side, with the other set on the other side. Pin the long sides of the fabric together and sew with 1/2-inch seam allowance. Be careful not to sew through the Velcro and backstitch at the beginning and end. Repeat making the main body for the second weight.

6. Sew the Center Divider

Turn the main body so it’s right side out. Press well. Fold the main body in half short ways to find the center. Finger press to make the center mark. Measure 1 /2 inches to the right of the center mark and make a line. Measure 1 1/2 inches to the left of the center mark and make another line. Sew along these two lines to create a divider for the weight. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of every stitch. You can use matching or contrasting thread here depending on what look you’d like to go for. Remove markings when finished. Make the center divider for the second weight.

7. Add the Filler

Take the main body of the weight and fill one of the sides up with some of your weighted filler. Be sure not to fill it more than 1/2 full. Repeat adding the filler for the second weight.

8. Stitch Closed

Being careful to keep your filler out of the way, take one end of the weight and fold in the extra fabric 1/4 inch. Press. Topstitch along the side of the weight, 1/8 inch away from the edge. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitches. Repeat with the other side. Finish the ends for the second weight.

9. Wear the Weights

To wear your DIY ankle and wrist weights, simply wrap them around the ankle or wrist and secure them with the Velcro. You’re ready for your next workout!

Tips for Making DIY Wrist and Ankle Weights

Use different types of fabric to create unique and stylish weights.

Experiment with different weighted fillers to find the perfect weight for your needs.

Add decorative stitching or embellishments to your weights to make them more personalized.

Make a set of weights in different sizes and weights to target different muscle groups.

Store your weights in a convenient location so you can easily grab them for your next workout.

Benefits of Using DIY Wrist and Ankle Weights

How to Design the Perfect Lap Pool for Your Home

Lap pools are a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors, and they can be a beautiful addition to any backyard. But before you start planning your lap pool, there are a few things you need to consider.

What is a Lap Pool?

Lap pools are long, narrow swimming pools that are typically used for exercise. They are typically rectangular in shape and range in length from 45 to 75 feet. The only standard length lap pool is an Olympic-sized pool, which is 50 meters long.

The History of Lap Pools

Lap pools have been around for centuries. The ancient Greeks and Romans built pools that were likely used for athletic training and military exercises. In the early 1970s, landscape designer Cleo Baldon brought the lap pool to California, and it quickly became a popular choice for homeowners who wanted a pool for exercise.

Considerations for Lap Pool Design

When designing your lap pool, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

Length: The length of your lap pool will depend on how much space you have and how long you want to swim. The minimum recommended length for a lap pool is 45 feet, but pools can be up to 75 feet long.

Width: Lap pools are typically 8 to 10 feet wide, but they can be wider if you have the space.

Depth: The depth of your lap pool will depend on how you plan to use it. If you will be using it primarily for swimming laps, you will want a depth of at least 4 feet. If you plan to use it for other activities, such as playing with children, you may want a shallower depth.

Shape: Lap pools are typically rectangular in shape, but they can also be oval or L-shaped.

Materials: Lap pools can be made from a variety of materials, including concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl.

Deck surround: The deck surround is an important part of your lap pool design. It provides a place to sit and relax, and it can also help to prevent debris from entering the pool.

Heating: If you plan to use your lap pool year-round, you will need to heat it. There are a variety of heating options available, including gas heaters, electric heaters, and solar heaters.

Cover: A pool cover can help to keep your pool clean and warm, and it can also reduce your energy costs. There are a variety of pool covers available, including thermal blankets and fully automated covers.

How to Build a Lap Pool

Building a lap pool is a complex project, and it is important to hire a qualified contractor to do the job. The process of building a lap pool typically involves the following steps:

Excavating the pool site

Installing the pool shell

Plumbing the pool

Installing the electrical system

Finishing the pool deck

How to Use a Lap Pool

Lap pools are a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Here are a few tips for using your lap pool:

Start slowly and gradually increase the distance and intensity of your workouts.

Use a swim stroke that is comfortable for you and that allows you to breathe easily.

Take breaks as needed and don’t push yourself too hard.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.

How to Maintain a Lap Pool

Lap pools require regular maintenance to keep them clean and in good condition. Here are a few tips for maintaining your lap pool:

Clean the pool filter regularly.

Check the pool water chemistry weekly and adjust as needed.

Vacuum the pool regularly to remove debris.

Brush the pool walls and steps regularly to remove algae.

Shock the pool weekly to kill bacteria.

By following these tips, you can keep your lap pool clean and in good condition for years to come.

How to Clean a Yoga Mat: A Comprehensive Guide Maintaining Yoga Mat Hygiene for Optimal Performance and Longevity Yoga mats are essential tools for yoga enthusiasts, providing a stable and…

How to Clean a Yoga Mat: A Comprehensive Guide

Maintaining Yoga Mat Hygiene for Optimal Performance and Longevity

Yoga mats are essential tools for yoga enthusiasts, providing a stable and comfortable surface for practice. However, regular use can accumulate sweat, dirt, and bacteria, compromising the mat’s hygiene and performance. Implementing a regular cleaning routine is crucial to ensure your yoga mat remains clean, disinfected, and in good condition.

Cleaning Frequency

After Every Session: Wipe down the mat with a clean towel to remove sweat and loose debris.

Weekly: Deep clean the mat, especially if used daily, to prevent odor and extend its lifespan.

Monthly or Bimonthly: Perform a thorough deep-cleaning to remove bacteria and fungus.

Materials You’ll Need

Equipment:

Bathtub or bucket

Sponge or soft cloth

Spray bottle

Microfiber towel

Materials:

Vinegar

Essential oil

Dishwashing liquid or gentle laundry detergent

Water

Hydrogen peroxide or isopropyl alcohol

Cleaning Methods

Spray Bottle Method

Make the Solution: Combine two parts water and one part vinegar in a spray bottle. Add three to five drops of essential oil for freshness.

Shake and Spray: Shake the mat to remove loose dirt. Spray the vinegar solution over one side and wipe down with a microfiber cloth.

Let Dry: Allow the mat to air-dry completely before cleaning the other side.

Deep Cleaning in the Bathtub

Mix the Solution: Fill the bathtub with warm water and add dishwashing liquid or gentle laundry detergent (one teaspoon per gallon of water).

Soak the Mat: Submerge the mat in the solution and soak for 10 minutes to loosen grime.

Scrub and Wipe: Use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub and wipe both sides of the mat, focusing on areas with heavy use.

Drain and Rinse: Drain the soapy water and rinse the mat thoroughly with fresh water. Repeat until the rinse water runs clear.

Remove Excess Water: Shake off excess water and roll the mat in a large towel to absorb moisture. You can also place the mat between two towels and walk on the top towel for additional absorption.

Sanitize: Spray the mat with a commercial sanitizing solution or a homemade solution of three parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide or isopropyl alcohol.

Hang to Dry: Drape the mat over a drying rack or hang it on an outdoor line. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat and agitation can damage the mat.

Can You Wash a Yoga Mat in the Washing Machine?

Some yoga mats are machine-washable, but it’s best to check the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a front-loading or high-efficiency top-loading washer without a center agitator. Select the gentle cycle and use a small amount of mild dish detergent. Air-dry the mat after the cycle is complete, avoiding the dryer. Excessive machine washing can damage the mat, so hand washing is generally recommended.

Tips for Long-Lasting Cleanliness

Wipe down the mat after every use and allow it to dry before storing.

Hang the mat instead of rolling it for better air circulation.

Wash your hands and feet before using the mat.

Keep the mat out of direct sunlight, which can cause it to become brittle.

Sprinkle baking soda on the mat to remove odors and restore grip.

Avoid using creams, lotions, and essential oils that can stain or damage the mat.

Use a yoga towel on top of the mat during sweaty sessions for easier cleaning.

Replace the mat if it becomes cracked or damaged, as cleaning can worsen the condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do yoga mats need to be cleaned?

A: Yes, regular cleaning is essential to prevent the accumulation of sweat, dirt, and bacteria, which can affect the mat’s hygiene, performance, and durability.

Q: What happens if you don’t clean a yoga mat?

A: An unclean yoga mat can become smelly, dirty, and harbor bacteria, making it unpleasant and potentially harmful to use. It can also become brittle and difficult to use, requiring replacement.

Q: How often should I deep clean my yoga mat?

A: Deep cleaning should be done monthly or bimonthly, depending on usage and sweat levels. More frequent deep cleaning is recommended for mats used in hot yoga or other sweaty workouts.
