Smithsonian Photo Contest: Capturing the World Through Diverse Lenses
The Allure of the Open Road and Beyond
Amateur photographers from around the globe showcased their talents in the Smithsonian’s 4th Annual Photo Contest. With over 8,447 digital submissions, the contest celebrated the beauty and diversity of our world through five distinct categories: The Natural World, Americana, People, Travel, and Altered Images.
Grand Prize: The Tukituki River Valley’s Enchanting Embrace
The grand prize honor went to 18-year-old Joelle Linhoff from Minnetonka, Minnesota, for her captivating image of New Zealand’s Tukituki River Valley. Her photograph, captured in the tranquility of a rising sun, evokes a profound connection to the natural world.
Category Winners: A Symphony of Perspectives
The Natural World: Teng Wei’s intriguing photograph of ants in Malaysia highlights the intricate details and unexpected behaviors found in nature. Damjan Voglar’s macro lens captured an erotic close-up of an agave plant, revealing the abstract forms and textures that surround us.
Americana: Jacqueline Cooper’s image of a young girl singing with her mother on dobro captures the essence of Appalachian heritage, preserving cultural roots while infusing them with new life.
People: Ezra Millstein’s poignant photograph of a religious ascetic in India showcases the contrast between the bustle of everyday life and the serene presence of spirituality. David Mendelsohn’s architectural perspective of the Manhattan Apple store’s glass cube invites viewers to study its reflections and textures.
Travel: Paul Hilts’ image of a monk ordination ceremony in Thailand juxtaposes modern technology with ancient traditions. Diane Kroupa’s photograph of Canyonlands National Park’s early morning light captures the breathtaking beauty of the natural world.
Altered Images: Shea Beebe’s imaginative photograph of her daughter combines reality and fantasy, layering an image of a tree and adding a golden tint to create a dream-like quality. Nicholas Edens’ digitally altered image of a white lion transforms its majestic presence into an ethereal moment.
Recurring Themes: Exploring the Human Experience
While the contest showcased a wide range of subjects, certain themes emerged, reflecting the shared experiences and emotions that unite us. The allure of the open road, with its lonely highways, neon-lit diners, and weathered barns, evoked a sense of nostalgia and wanderlust. Cowboys, from the guitar-playing “Naked Cowboy” to more traditional figures, embodied the spirit of the American West.
The Power of Photography: Connecting Us to the World
Helen Starkweather, the editor who coordinates the contest, acknowledges the recurring themes, but emphasizes that many photographs draw on archetypes that resonate with our shared humanity. She believes that these images remind us of the experiences, emotions, and relationships that transcend cultural and geographic boundaries.
