New DNA analysis has confirmed what Aboriginal Australians have long claimed: they belong to the world’s oldest sustained civilization. A comprehensive study of Indigenous Australian DNA has shown that their ancestors were the first to split off from other humans after migrating out of Africa between 51,000 and 72,000 years ago.

Genetic Tracing Unlocks the Past

To determine the approximate time that humans left Africa, scientists analyzed DNA from 787 individuals representing 270 modern cultures worldwide. By tracking ancient genetic mutations, they identified when different ethnicities diverged as their ancestors settled across the globe.

The study revealed that the first Homo sapiens began leaving Africa between 51,000 and 72,000 years ago. The ancestors of Indigenous Australians were the first group to split off from this migration, diverging from the ancestors of European and Asian people about 58,000 years ago.

A Journey Across Asia and the Sea

These early humans eventually made their way to an ancient supercontinent that later split into Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Although this isolation separated them genetically from the rest of the world, their culture flourished as they developed new languages and traditions across the continent.

Connections to the Land

“This study confirms our beliefs that we have ancient connections to our lands and have been here far longer than anyone else,” said Aubrey Lynch, an Indigenous elder from Australia’s Goldfields region.

The genetic analysis also suggests that the ancestors of Indigenous Australians and Papuans may have interbred with a previously unknown human species, similar to the interbreeding between ancient Europeans and Neanderthals. Further research could shed light on this mysterious human relative.

While the study provides compelling evidence for the antiquity of Aboriginal Australian society, it also raises new questions. The genetic analysis has opened up avenues for further research into the interactions between early humans and other hominin species, as well as the cultural and linguistic diversity that emerged during their long history in Australia.
